First Industrial insulation displacement connectors with a 2.55-mm profile

April 19, 2018 By Mary Gannon Leave a Comment

AVX Corp. has released the new 9176-800 series low-profile insulation displacement connectors (IDCs), which reduce the Z-axis height of the next-lowest-profile insulated IDC connector, the 9176-400 Series, by 1 mm, reduce the total overall volume of the Standard 00-9176 Series IDCs by more than 50%, and are the first industrial IDCs available in a 2.55-mm profile.

AVX265-9176-800-Series-Low-Profile-IDCs-PRDesigned to connect discrete 22–26 AWG solid and stranded wires and leaded components to PCBs, or to connect PCBs together in a daisy chain configuration, the new 9176-800 series low-profile IDCs are available in a range of sizes extending from one to four positions in each wire gauge, and feature redundant, fatigue-resistant phosphor bronze contacts that provide gas-tight, cold-welded wire connections that are compatible with potting and overmolding encapsulation processes for environmental protection. Rated for 300 V, 4–6 A, and operating temperatures spanning –40° to 125°C, the series delivers high-reliability power and signal connections in space-constrained, harsh-environment industrial, medical, and transportation applications including: smart metering, sensors, building controls, portable monitoring and measuring devices, point-of-sale equipment, handheld inventory management devices, security systems, patient monitoring equipment, and LED lighting.

“We developed our new 9176-800 series low-profile IDCs with an industry-leading 2.55-mm profile to provide design engineers working in the industrial, medical, and transportation markets with robust, high-reliability interconnect solutions ideal for use in a wide range of high-density, space-constrained applications exposed to harsh environmental conditions,” said Tom Anderson, connector product manager at AVX Interconnect. “AVX leads the market offering of 22–28 AWG IDC solutions, and our IDC technology is backed by more than 10 years of proven performance in rugged industrial and transportation applications.”

The new 9176-800 series low-profile IDC connectors feature a flat, integral, glass-filled Nylon 46 cap compliant with UL94 V-0 and designed for automated pick-and-place assembly, and enable simple, single-step termination. To further ensure error-free termination, the one-position versions are also available in eight colors designed to match individual wires. Current ratings are reliant upon AWG; the 22 AWG connectors are rated for 6 A, the 24 AWG connectors are rated for 5 A, and the 26 AWG connectors are rated or 4 A, and every connector in the series is rated for three-cycle durability. Parts are packaged in tape and reel in quantities of 1,700, UL approval is expected in April 2018, and 28 AWG versions are currently in development.
