When I attended PackExpo last month, my first booth visit was with Craig Zagorski, Applications Manager for Automation/Machinery, at Harting Inc. Zagorski gave me a history of the German-founded company, and introduced me to the variety of components that it manufactures. Interestingly enough, the company got its start as a hardware store that turned to manufacturing the knob-style, pull cigarette machines (which it has since modernized and still designs and sells).
However, the component that really caught my eye was Harting’s Han connectors—particularly its modular inserts. These connectors allow users to insert multiple termination styles (IDC, screw, crimp) and can accommodate communication, signal, and power circuits along with fiber optic or compressed air lines in a single connector. That’s pretty cool. Zagorski said this is a rare component and only one or two others manufacture something similar.
This customizable connector simplifies machine design by reducing the number of cables needed to be used, thus saving time and money in building machines, installing and moving them, and of course, in maintaining them.
Pnuematic modules come with two or three contacts. Contacts are available in 1.6, 3, 4, and 6 mm. The Han 200 A module is available with axial and screw terminations. The Han RJ45 Ethernet Module is a shielded module that connects all eight data lines and fulfills cat. 5e requirements.
