Passive metal camera cable enables 10 Gbps over 5 m

December 8, 2025 By Redding Traiger Leave a Comment

Infineon Technologies and 3M have announced a 5 m passive metal industrial camera cable assembly for USB3 Vision machine-vision cameras. The 3M Industrial Camera Cable Assembly 1U30P-TC series is specified to support data rates up to 10 Gbps over the full 5 m length, targeting factory-floor deployments where camera placement flexibility and deterministic image transfer are required for real-time inspection and process control.

The design is intended for industrial automation environments where electromagnetic noise, vibration, and long cable routing paths can degrade signal integrity. The cable assembly is positioned as a passive alternative to longer links that often require active repeaters or signal conditioning, helping reduce system complexity while maintaining USB3 Vision interoperability.

Signal-integrity margin is supported by Infineon’s EZ-USB FX10 peripheral controller technology, which incorporates a USB 3.2 PHY with transmitter optimization and receiver equalization features. Infineon cites support for up to 28 dB insertion loss, enabling operation across higher-loss interconnect paths typical of extended industrial cabling. An integrated eye monitor provides signal-quality feedback intended to support validation, debug, and maintenance workflows during camera bring-up and line qualification.

The 5 m passive link length supports more flexible placement of machine-vision cameras on manufacturing equipment while preserving throughput for high-resolution imaging and high-frame-rate capture. Target applications include automated inspection and quality-control stations, in-line measurement systems, and camera deployments in electrically noisy settings such as automotive manufacturing, electronics assembly, food processing, and pharmaceutical production.

Additional information on the EZ-USB FX10 and FX5N USB 10 Gbps peripheral controllers and related machine-vision resources is available from Infineon.
